Aaron Farberg, MD < Back Aaron Farberg, MD Faculty Aaron S. Farberg, M.D. is a double board-certified dermatologist and fellowship-trained Mohs surgeon that specializes in skin cancer, inflammatory diseases, and cosmetic dermatology. Dr. Farberg is a summa cum laude graduate of Emory University and continued his education at the University of Michigan, where he received his medical degree. Dr. Farberg’s post-graduate training includes additional residency years at the University of Michigan in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery and, in New York, as a clinical research fellow in association with the National Society for Cutaneous Medicine and New York University. He then remained in New York, completing another residency in Dermatology at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai Hospital, where he served as chief resident. In addition to treating patients, Dr. Farberg has been a clinical investigator on numerous studies, including FDA clinical trials. He is an accomplished author and has published over 100 articles in professional medical journals. He serves as a member of the editorial board for several medical journals including Dermatology & Therapy and SKIN. Dr. Farberg also founded the Dermatology Science and Research Foundation to provide dermatology education to his patients and peers. Dr. Farberg has been recognized as one of Dallas’s leading dermatologists with numerous awards and honors. He most recently was ranked by his dermatology colleagues in Newsweek Magazine as the #1 medical dermatologist in Texas and #6 in the entire country. This activity is supported by an educational grant from Cockerell Dermatopathology Target Audience This activity has been designed to meet the educational needs of physician assistants and nurse practitioners involved in caring for patients with dermatologic disorders. Program Overview The purpose of this meeting is the hone the clinical skills of PAs and NPs that are focused on treating patients with dermatologic disorders. Educational Objectives After completing this activity, the participant should be better able to: Discuss & translate the current trends and future innovations associated with clinical dermatology and dermatopathology Demonstrate an improved knowledge base of the various treatment options and the use of multiple modalities in treating specific dermatologic disorders. Recall the basic principles for treating dermatologic disorders, including biologics, combination therapy, and futu re treatments. Discuss & implement learned skills about the clinical and histopathologic features, management, and treatment of common skin cancers and non-cancerous skin disorders. Appraise & evaluate new diagnostic and treatment algorithms for pigmented neoplasms (including melanoma), carcinomas, and inflammatory conditions. Assess the use of physical therapies, including cryotherapy, radiation therapy, photodynamic therapy, and light therapy, in treating skin lesions. Accreditation Statement In support of improving patient care, this activity has been planned and implemented by Medical Education Resources (MER) and Cockerell Educational Foundation. MER is jointly accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), to provide continuing education for the healthcare team. James Del Rosso, DO < Back James Del Rosso, DO Faculty James Q. Del Rosso, D.O. has been practicing dermatology since 1986, and in the Las Vegas area at the Las Vegas Skin & Cancer Clinics since 1997. He is an Adjunct Clinical Professor of Dermatology at the Touro University of College of Osteopathic Medicine in Henderson, Nevada, and has the distinction of being the first and only dermatology residency program director in the history of the state of Nevada. Prior to coming to Las Vegas, Dr. Del Rosso served as Head of the Section of Dermatology at the Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine in Athens, and Visiting Faculty Member in Dermatology at Ohio State University (OSU) in Columbus where he twice was honored as Educator of the Year by the dermatology residents and dermatopathology fellows. He received his D.O. degree from Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine, interned at Doctors Hospital in Columbus, completed a dermatology residency at Atlantic Skin Disease and Skin Surgery in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and a fellowship in Mohs micrographic surgery and cutaneous oncology at OSU. At his practice in Henderson, Nevada, he is proud of the quality of service provided and has an exceptional support staff of nurses and medical assistants who are dedicated to quality patient care. Dr. Del Rosso is an internationally renowned dermatologist. He is Clinical Editor of the Journal of Clinical and Aesthetic Dermatology, has published multiple peer-reviewed articles and textbook chapters, and was President of the American Acne & Rosacea Society, American Society of Mohs Surgery, and the American Osteopathic College of Dermatology. He is one of the most highly requested and well-respected educators in dermatology, invited to present regularly at dermatology meetings both nationally and internationally. Ciaran Smythe, DO Ciaran Smythe, DO Faculty Ciaran was born and raised in the Pacific Northwest. He graduated Magna Cum Laude from the University of Oregon with a degree in human physiology and minor in chemistry. He proudly followed in his mother’s footsteps by pursuing osteopathic medicine and attended the Western University of Health Sciences COMP-Northwest, where he received the prestigious Arthur O. Rott Scholarship and graduated valedictorian of his class. Ciaran began his residency training in orthopedic surgery, during which time he found his passion for dermatology. He conducted research in skin cancer, medical dermatology, and cosmetic dermatology in Florida prior to beginning residency at Lake Granbury Medical Center. He enjoys finding ways to contribute to the field through education, leadership, and community outreach. Mr. Gray is currently a Director, Data Science at Walmart Global Tech – US Omni Retail Tech where he leads teams that increase efficiency, cost effectiveness, and profit performance leveraging data and advanced analytics methods and solutions focused on End-to-End Fulfillment. His teams deliver economic impact and business value in the 9-figure range annually. He has been a member of two INFORMS Prize winning organizations: Walmart (2023) and American Airlines (1990). Joseph Merola, MD, MMS < Back Joseph Merola, MD, MMS Faculty Joseph F. Merola, M.D., M.M.S. , a leading clinician, researcher, and clinical investigator who treats immune-mediated diseases such as psoriasis/psoriatic arthritis and lupus, has been named Chair of Dermatology . Dr. Merola, who joined UT Southwestern October 16, 2023. came from Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School in Boston. He held many leadership positions there, including Vice Chair of the Department of Dermatology in Clinical Trials and Innovation, Director of the Clinical Unit for Research Innovation and Trials, Director of the Center for Skin and Related Musculoskeletal Diseases, and Director of the Harvard Combined Internal Medicine-Dermatology Residency Training Program. He received his medical degree from New York University School of Medicine and a Master of Medical Sciences degree from Harvard Medical School. He then completed an internship at the University of Pennsylvania, a residency in dermatology at New York University Medical Center, and both a residency in internal medicine and a fellowship in rheumatology at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. “The multidisciplinary skills, clinical expertise, and leadership record that Dr. Merola brings will expand the Department of Dermatology’s tradition for excellence and further enhance our institution as a national hub for discovery and innovation,” said W. P. Andrew Lee, M.D. , Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs, Provost, and Dean of UT Southwestern Medical School. Dr. Merola specializes in hard-to-treat cases of immune-related inflammatory disorders, which can lead to damage to skin, cartilage, bone, and internal organs. He is the Founding President of the Psoriasis and Psoriatic Arthritis Clinics Multicenter Advancement Network, Vice President of the Group for Research and Assessment of Psoriasis and Psoriatic Arthritis, a member of the National Psoriasis Foundation Medical Board and Scientific Advisory Committee, and President of the Medical Dermatology Society, among multiple other leadership positions. He also has led clinical trials funded by the National Institutes of Health and the pharmaceutical industry related to inflammatory skin and joint disease including psoriasis/psoriatic arthritis, and he has published more than 300 peer-reviewed articles.
